A very big thank you as well to our program funders: ACOA and IET. It is your generous contribution that makes events like this possible.
Next, a huge thank you to our mentors who graciously volunteered their time to guide our participants through the startup and pitch process:
Rob Thomas (Qalipu), Dr. Ken Carter (Grenfell Office of Engagement and Research), Mark Tierney (ACOA), Linda Spingle (IENL/Study & Stay), Ashley Pomeroy (NLOWE), Dustin Parsons (Marble Mountain & Steady Entertainment), pitch coach Carole Spicer (Spicer Facilitation and Learning), and to Julia Allingham (Saucy Newfoundland Co.) who intended on joining as a judge, but who got excited about an idea on Friday evening and decided to join a team instead. The entrepreneurial spark is contagious!
Many thanks to our judges Carla May (NLOWE), Denise Gibbons (CNA and Navigate Board Member), and Darin Brooks (CNA) for taking on the task of deliberating and choosing the pitch winners. The scoring was close!
And last, but not least, a big thank you to our fearless facilitator, Dr. Billy Newell (Grenfell Faculty of Business) for his great energy and guidance throughout the weekend, to Charlene Connors (Extended Learning Program Developer) for her excellent event management and organizational skills, and to Aaron Crossley and Ed Johnson (Grenfell ITS) for their tech support, to Roshayne Mendis for her help and dedication with pre-event planning and organizing, to our student volunteers, to Facilities Management, and to Sprout Marketing for their event promo and social media support throughout the weekend. This event would not have been such a success without the many hands who made it all possible!
Can I get a Yes Way, Jose?! |

Thank you all for helping to make the third annual Dr. Jose Lam Startup Event a tremendous success! We look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Rural Design Conference held at new Centre for Research and Innovation
A Rural Design Conference was recently hosted in the innovation space of the Centre for Research and Innovation (CRI) in Corner Brook. The CRI is a collaborative project of Grenfell Campus, Memorial University, Corner Brook Pulp and Paper, the City of Corner Brook and the Corner Brook Campus on College of the North Atlantic. Navigate will operate a makerspace in the centre.
The event, which took place Oct. 24-25, featured keynotes and hands-on skills building activities. It was also an opportunity for participants to interact with designers and the design-curious from across Canada and beyond who are poised to shape the field and who are curious about the opportunity for greater impact in rural areas.
“Rural design is an emerging field that we are building together,” said organizer Dr. Todd Hennessey. “What better place than Newfoundland and Labrador to launch this discussion and this network?”
The conference covered:
1) The current state of the rural design field
2) How rural areas might gain value from designers
3) How to work with design firms to support and build capacity in rural areas
“Design firms across the country also hosted their own local events and engaged with rural communities, so we were part of a larger conversation taking place across the continent that day,” said Dr. Hennessey.
For more information about the conference, visit: https://www.ruraldesignnetwork.com/conference2022 |
